Dan,

While there are no longer any gaps to fill-in in late 18th C. orchestral
music, old traditions die hard and this was the case for using a keyboard
instrument. We know that the tradition continued into the 1790's even in
Germany. Tromlitz in one of his many digressions, devotes an entire
paragraph to why the keyboard should be left out of a "band" (pp 67-68 of
the Powell tranlation). Interestingly enough it is because he felt that the
keyboard's tempered scale force the entire orchestra to play out of tune.
Now, if some German orchestras were not still using a continuo instrument,
there would have been no reason for old Johonn to complain.

In conservative England, it was not unusual to see a pianoforte used well
into the early 19th C.!

I have no idea what Lawson has in mind if, as you say, he has
a harpsichord playing fill-in-the-gaps. While that might have
been appropriate for music 50 years earlier, I don't know of
a tradition to have harpsichord fill-ins for solo non-piano
instrumental literature of this period.....
