I soak my reeds in water, too. I share Roger's "feeling" that the
mucoproteins in saliva might gum up the works on a microscopic level or
encourage breakdown of the cane components by fungi or bacteria. I have no
scientific proof of this.

But I do find that a well-soaked reed (after 5 minutes or so in water)
responds better. And it's comforting during a performance to know that a
couple other reeds are ready and waiting should I need to make a quick
switch. Maybe this is just psychological but anything that reduces
performance stress is a GOOD THING, as Martha Stewart might say ;-)

I use the little plastic reed soaker cup that some oboists use; it comes with
a bracket that fits my Manhasset stand. I think I bought the setup from the
Woodwind & Brasswind for about $7 or so.
