David,

You must understand that the vibration you feel on the body of the clarinet
has an extreamly small effect on the propogation of sound waves in a room.
They are just not forceful enough (amplitude). The change in tone quality
you may notice is due to other variables, not "muting" the bell. The violin
body is THE amplifier to the vibration of its strings. Its whole design is
for this purpose. I suppose you can design a woodwind with some sort of
soundbox, in which case the material, its thickness, geometry, etc. would
become very important. But as it is made now, the clarinet does not work on
these principals. It is the bore and facing of the mouthpiece, the internal
dementions of the barral and body, the method of cutting and placement of
the tone holes, the depth of the tone holes, and a several other things that
determines the sound of the instrument, not what material it's made of or
it's vibration.

Of course, if your method helps in convincing your pupils to relax and not
put a death grip on the instrument, use it.

Subject: [kl] Material vs. Belief?

....Having tried it out, I am convinced that the body of the clarinet does
vibrate.
How this relates to the violin, I don't know...

It would be "unscientific" to presume that a clarinet is so stable as to
completely resist all movement of the vibrating reed and vibrating air
column.
What did we learn in school? Every action causes a reaction.

But perhaps it is not the material's properties of vibrating but its
properties of
absorbing and/or reflecting the sound which is in question here. It would be
interesting to find out why putting a hand on the barrel can cause these
properties to change. Or has anyone managed to scientifically proove that
there is
no change?
