Please excuse me. I was not intending to compare the tone production qualities of
the violin to that of the clarinet. What I meant to say was merely that it gave me
the *idea* to try it out on the clarinet.

Having tried it out, I am convinced that the body of the clarinet does vibrate.
How this relates to the violin, I don't know...

It would be "unscientific" to presume that a clarinet is so stable as to
completely resist all movement of the vibrating reed and vibrating air column.
What did we learn in school? Every action causes a reaction.

But perhaps it is not the material's properties of vibrating but its properties of
absorbing and/or reflecting the sound which is in question here. It would be
interesting to find out why putting a hand on the barrel can cause these
properties to change. Or has anyone managed to scientifically proove that there is
no change?
