I think there is a very practical reason why they use wood - if they did
not, they could never sell them to people like David Renaud. There are some
plastic barrels on the market, but at much lower prices. If they are made
with skill and care equivalent to the work Fobes and Pyne put into them,
they would have to sell for a comparable price. Since they can't fetch the
price because they aren't wood, they have to be made cheaply, and you have
what is known as a "self fulfilling prophecy."

This same arguments has been made for wood vs. plastic clarinets - some
time ago.
