Of course, the mechanism of tone production in a violin is so greatly
different from that of the clarinet as to make any comparison irrelevant.
Everyone knows the violin's body DOES, and in fact MUST, vibrate to produce
a tone. Yamaha uses this fact to good effect in their "Silent Violin"
which has no vibrating body. The player hears its sound via a
peizoelectric pickup, electric amplification and earphones. One standing
next to the player hears only the soft, weak sound of the strings, someone
in the next room hears nothing at all.
