Why cointanly it is!

The length of the curve is often the culprit, but then there are other
issues such as the baffle as it rolls to the tip rail, the exact
measurement of the distance between the side rails - especially at the tip,
and, of course, the depth of the baffle.

You can gain quite a bit more actual projection using the same amount of
air - but it is always a trade-off - this is where the taper and
measurements of the bore are so critical - as Clark has pointed out.
