Subj: [kl] Labor Dispute in NYC
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 00:37:38 -0500

An interesting situation brewing here in New York! I just got off the phone
with a friend of mine and it seems the Metropolitan Opera's labor dispute just
got pushed into high gear. Joe Volpe, the General Manager, not noted for his
patience with such situations, has fired the ENTIRE orchestra and will be
holding general auditions starting within the next few weeks.

Apparently, orchestra rehearsals were secretly being taped for the last
several seasons with the expectation that this situation might arise. TAPED
orchestral accompinaments will be used starting tonight. Season ticket buyers
are just finding out about this and are expected to return seats in droves. A
mass picketing campaign by all of 802's available members (including the
entire orchestra) are expected to fill the Lincoln Center plaza tonight. I
will report more tommorow after I attend.
