Bill,
I've had a couple of surgeries in that area over the last 20 years. If
I remember right it took about 2 weeks before I started playing again (with
very soft reeds and very little endurance). One surgery I had in high
school was about a foot long cut into my chest. After I was feeling better
in the hospital, I played the soprano recorder - almost no air pressure and
somewhat soft but you can work on finger technique. It can be done but
don't push it if it hurts.
