The book I use is called:

A History of Western Music
by Donald J. Grout and Claude V. Palisca
Fifth Edition published by W.W Norton 1996
862 pages

It is an American book which cost me £30 just over 6 months ago. It is very
informative and provides good examples and quoations from the composers.
