My favorite is "The Continuity of Music: A History of Influence" by
Irving Kolodin. Kolodin traces the influence of composers on other
composers by discovering who owned scores of works by colleagues, or
heard performances of various works. It's a fascinating read, unlike most
music history texts. It is also far from complete in its coverage of all
of music history. But it might give you a taste of the subject, and
encourage you to look in other places for more information.

One small problem - the book is out of print. You'd have to track it down
in a library, or try a used book search at a store that handles them. I
got my copy for $10 (US) after such a search.

Have fun!

David
