Subj: Re: [kl] Clarinet and Sax Reeds; Price vs. Quality

Greetings to All,
I've been professionally involved in the music business for nearly 40 years
now, and as a retail music store owner and woodwind player, I am
continually faced with questions from customers concerning the price and
quality of Clarinet and Saxophone reeds. Why, for example, is one
brand/style of reed preferred over the ubiqitous, least expensive RICO.
What justifies the price range of reeds (from a low of 1.45 up to nearly $4
per clarinet reed, in our store anyway). What, exactly does the
manufacturer do to determine (cause) one reed to be worth more (or less)
than another. I'm considering doing an article for THE WOODWIND QUARTERLY
on the topic, and I would be very interested in the views of others on the
list.

Best Regards, Lars Kirmser
