or whatever (I anthropomorphize, too :)

Yes - Sneezy is set up to strip out most attachments other than text.
The following file types are not allowed on the list: excel, rtf,
msword, ms-tnef, xlf, pdf, X-Lotus-Encap2, zip, midi, x-midi, gif, jpeg,
bmp, multipart/alternative, multipart/related, html, x-sgml, richtext,
enriched, x-vcard, mpeg, quicktime, x-vrml, octet-stream, and
x-msdownload. All of these have appeared at one time or another on the
Klarinet list or have been judged (by me, in my occasional benign
dictator role) to be either a hazard or inordinate waste of mailing list
bandwidth.

Once in a while someone slips one by (some new type of attachment). It
gets put on the list right away.

I do offer an alternative - if there's a midi or picture you'd like
everyone to see send it to me personally and I'll make it available to
interested parties via a unique mail address on Sneezy.

While we're on the (somewhat off-topic - after all, we _are_ using
computers to communicate, so it's not totally off-topic), there is one
important site I use for security updates:
www.cert.org - the Carnegie-Mellon site (there's a brand new Melissa
Word Macro virus already listed there.) You can get on their mailing
list to be notified of security issues. Highly recommended for anyone
who runs a computer network or has machines directly on the Internet,
but overkill for most people. It's especially useful for Unix boxes on
the Internet.

I also run a virus checker periodically on my home PC and update my
virus list weekly, "just in case".
Cheers,
----
