Ken - There is no doubt about the quality of the clarinet faculty at
DePaul. Also, the spirit of comraderie among the faculty that you
describe is attractive. Tell us something about the quality of the
other music courses and teachers (theory, music history), and of the
orchestra. How do the strings sound?
Thanks and feel free to e-mail me privately if it is more appropriate.

Without a doubt, the musicianship classes (theory and history), ear
training, and piano lab classes are excellent. DePaul works on a
quarter/tri-mester system which makes it more convenient to combine both
history and theory. Further, the methods used by the professor here for
ear training are very effective. He teaches everything to the classes
the opposite way that you may have learned them in the past, like
learning to hear thirds and fourths going down instead of up.
Additionally, he writes all of his books that he uses in his classes.
The musicianship classes are very structured and concrete. We started at
Gregorian chant and will continue through the present. The piano lab
classes consist of meeting one day to learn new techniques and having a
quiz a week later on the material. Let me mention now that the music
"core" (musicianship, ear training, piano lab) are required for the first
2 years or 6 quarters total. The amount of work that must be completed
is great and must be done in a small amount of time which keeps everyone
on track. <---sorry.... this paragraph was pretty random typing.

as for the orchestra...the orchestra is strong and many say that DePaul
sounds better than Northwestern's orchestra now. I cannot say whether or
not that is true because I have not attended any of their concerts yet.
The conductor is Cliff Colnot, principal preparatory conductor of the
Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He is very strict and makes it clear as to
what he wants. His great ability as a conductor is what keeps the
orchestra alive and technically stable.

My apologies for the randomness of my statements. Please feel free to
ask me more questions!

P.S. Will many of the members of this list be in Belgium this summer?
The DePaul clarinet choir will be there, so I hope to meet up with many
of you if you attend!
