The Shifrin vs Neidich vs Leister vs Stolzman vs etc. debate brings to
mind the decades-long rivalry between admirers of Toscanini and those of
Stokowsky, one which is probably still raging long after the deaths of
both. Toscanini has been accused of demanding perfection in execution
to the point of sterile, mechanical performances by frightening and
terrorizing the players, and Stokowsky of being a charlatan, a cheap
showman, even a clown, for promoting such unthinkable travesties as free
bowing. It would be fascinating to know which list members who love
Neidich/hate Shifrin, and vice versa, would list themselves with either
the Toscanini or the Stokowsky crowd. Any takers?
