Ryan Huch and any other on the college "hunt,"

My name is Kenneth Chin and I am a clarinet student here at DePaul
University in Chicago, IL. I am originally from New Jersey where I
participated in various state music activities in addition to being a
member of the New York Youth Symphony and attending the Manhattan School
of Music Preparatory Division throughout my junior and senior years of
high school. The question that always comes up in conversations about my
education is the following: "Why did you come all the way out here?!?"

Well, the answer is simple: because of the clarinet faculty. You may
have never heard of DePaul University before this message; I must admit
that I didn't know much about it until my later years in high school. I
only knew of Northwestern by its name. Once I did look into DePaul,
however, I was fascinated when I learned about the prestigious faculty.
It is a small school which is ideal if you want individual attention, you
don't want to get lost in the crowd of 80+ clarinetists, and if you don't
want to be taught by graduate students. The faculty makes up the Chicago
Clarinet Trio: showing that they always interact and get along with each
other. From the beginning, you get to work with each of the faculty
members, whether it be masterclasses or chamber music coachings (i.e.
clarinet choir). Additionally, when appropriate, you have the option of
studying in more than one studio ("sharing students"), which is ideal
when it comes to getting different insights and/or interpretations. This
shows how open the faculty is with each other. None of the "once you
leave my studio, you can never come back" or "it's my way or nobody's
way" stuff will be found here. There is absolutely no rivalry between
the studios. Also, attending a school in a city setting, like that of
Chicago, has its numerous benefits. With the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
only 10 minutes away, you cannot lose. IMHO, this is the kind of setting
that you want to look for in a college or university when you are
pursuing a degree in performance.

Who makes up the clarinet faculty here at DePaul University? Would you
have guessed that they are Mrs. Julie DeRoche, "big-time" Chicago
freelance clarinetist/#1sub for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and
president-elect to the International Clarinet Association, Mr. John Bruce
Yeh, assistant principal clarinet in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and
Mr. Larry Combs, principal clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

It does not have to be DePaul University when you attend college;
although, you should try to attend at least once during your career. In
any event, you should look for at least a few of the same characteristics
that I mentioned about DePaul when you decide on which school to attend.

Good luck to you and your future endeavors. My apologies to the list for
my always jumping at the chance to talk about my school.
