Even if you pack it securely as one of the other posters has described, I
strongly recommend that you buy insurance for it. Many music stores can
tell you who to contact or even have forms from various companies.

Airlines ARE getting stricter every day about carry ons so be sure that you
check in advance before you try to carry on such a large item or you could
find yourself standing at the airport inadequately prepared for checking
your instrument.
