Airlines are getting MORE stringent every day. I have recently (within the
last month) seen where several airports have now installed a "gate" on the
x-ray machines and if it won't go through the gate, they send you back to
the check in counter.

Airline travel has risen while routes have been consolidated leading to very
full aircraft. There is no longer room for them to be generous and allow
people to carry on extra or oversize bags.
