Respectfully submitted In response to Prof. Roger Garrett's comments:

>I snipped the post that was included below Mark's above - it was mine and
>had to do with the measurements of Richard Hawkins' mouthpieces. I am
>unsure of why Mark replied regarding Borbeck's mouthpieces when the post
>had to do with Hawkins' mouthpiece?

I got tacked onto ... inadvertently.

>Custom mouthpieces are great in that you can sit there and the mouthpiece
>maker/facer will adjust the facing to better suit the player's needs. In
>most instances, mouthpiece makers do not mess with the bore, baffle, or
>side/tip rails once it gets to this stage. Hopefully, all Mr. Borbeck
>does differently on the custom mouthpieces vs. the "mass produced"
>mouthpieces is this kind of work?

My point was: THEY ARE DIFFERENT BLANKS! <excuse my yelling>

>Secrets, secrets, secrets! As Richard told me when I worked with him, the
>technology is out there for anyone to make mouthpieces and/or face
>mouthpieces. It's too bad the measurements and processes are kept secret
>by a few. Everyone else has to relearn - can you imagine where the car
>industry would be today if that had been the case??? Hmmmm.....maybe that
>was a bad choice of analogies!! LOL.

I am a CPA. I own my own Firm and employ several other CPA's who in turn
support their families. I provide pay, benefits, and emotional support <when
not having a crisis of my own> in exchange for giving the firm "a day's
work". Our clients pay us in turn. No doubt the situation is EXACTLY THE
SAME for Mr. Fobes, Mr. Borbeck, Mr. Smith. BG, Van Doren/DiDario have
stockholders and mouths to feed as well. I do my share of pro bono work,
making my firm and MY services available to those in need or a jam. NOW, if
you want me to FREELY share my "book of knowledge" so that you what you
learn from me will enable you NOT to pay me ... you are asking way too
much!

There is NO FREE LUNCH out there! I am not going to get into a discusson of
capitalism v. socialism etc. Put simply, I do NOT want a free lunch because
I beieve I understand the implications of a free lunch.

Mr. Borbeck trained with Mr. Kaspar. I am sure that Mr. Fobes background is
equally distinguished, as are the many other EXPERTS in this field of
endeavor. THEY PAID THEIR DUES. They now wish to sell their goods/wares at
MARKET VALUES. If they disclose everything about their goods which would
fall into the area of THEIR TRADE SECRETS ... they would be cutting their
own throats.

BUT, I, the consumer would have MY throat cut too. You see, Mr. Borbeck &
others would NO LONGER BE SELLING THEIR WARES <because they couldn't make a
living>. As a consequence, ***VOILE*** I could no longer get the
Mouthpiece or help I needed.

Terrific ? ... NOT.

Reminds me of the the fellow who raised 20,000 Bees on the 20th Story of his
apartment in Manhattan and then, suddenly, moved to Miami leaving the poor
Bees behind with no one to care for them. Hey, it was ONLY a hobby!

I need PROFESSIONAL support. I have a responsibility to the maker of my
mouthpiece JUST as I have responsibility to my TEACHER ... in order to keep
my Teacher in business I may her money <gladly> she repays me HANDSOMELY for
what I bargained for: KNOWLEDGE!

Good day, all.
