A great idea, Frank! I'd like to listen to that competition. (With my lack
of adequate double reed skills, I'd be unlikely to compete.)

I wonder, however, about your use of the word "standard." Do others on the
mailing list agree with Frank's list of "13 standard doubles"? Although
I've had several calls for both alto flute and Eb clarinet, they appear
less often in the pit books I've seen than the other 11 instruments listed.
Is this truly a "standard" that is listed in some AFM doubler's guidebook?
(A serious question from an amateur who has never seen such a documented
standard if it exists.) I ask because I've seen more calls for soprano,
alto, and tenor recorders than I have for alto flute. Then there's the bass
sax, which also appears on occasion.

Dare we add the bass sax and the most common members of the recorder family
to the "standard" list, or is there really a set of "13 standard doubles"?
