Subj: [kl] American Pedler...anyone know?
Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 22:31:59 -0500

I have acquired a clarinet made by American Pedler in Elkhart, IN. It is in a
burgundy alligator-type case with a brass medallion on the side and one lock
on the middle latch, operated by a skeleton key which i have. It came with a
marching lyre, which I also have. It apparently only comes apart into 2
pieces; the bell and barrel are attached. The serial number is E11397. My
father (who is 62) gave it to me. He said that in the summer of '42, when he
was 5, his neighbor, a recent high school graduate, was going off to the navy
(he was tragically killed in the war) and his family gave a lot of his stuff
to my dad's famly, including the clarinet. My dad mentioned that he had taken
one lesson on it and barely could make a sound, so he quit. I am interested
in having it restored and learning to play it. It has, I assume, not been
played on a regular basis since 1942. I have looked in all the serial #
databases I could find, etc. to find any info about the company and when this
clarinet was made. Can anyone provide information about either? Thanx,
Tommy Cox
