When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, they did all 4 at once, all 4 were
impacted, and 2 required that my jaw be "cracked" and then wired. There
was no question as to when I could play again. I couldn't eat (other than
Ensure). much less play for some time. If you have stitches (absorbable or
not), I would wait until the stiches come out before I even *thought* about
playing. I imagine your jaw will let you know when it's time to resume.

As for Tony Pay's anecdote about Andrew Marriner:

>Andrew Marriner (son of Neville, and principal clarinet of the LSO) had
>a different experience when the operation on his lower jaw damaged a
>sensory nerve from his lower lip, half of which he cannot now feel.

I lost sensory feeling on one side of my lower jaw (my dentist told me I
might) but it returned in about 8-10 months. I still played the clarinet
but it was quite an odd feeling (or lack, rather) to have to rely on the
right side of my mouth to "steer" the left side. After a while, I just got
used to it; after a longer while, I got better.

This reminds me of the fellow who, after breaking his arm in an auto
accident, asked his doctor if he would be able to play the violin. When
the doctor told him that, once his arm healed, there was no reason the
patient couldn't play his violin, the patient said, "That's great! I've
always wanted to play the violin."

Sorry for that one.
