Gary,

I know course offerings differ considerably across the country, but at
Glendale Community College in Glendale, California, one can take a 2-unit
Applied Music course which meets once a week. Each student performs three
times per semester and his or her performances are critiqued by both the
student's professor and peers. For the cost of the 2-unit course ($24),
students get 8 full hours of private instruction per semester! The college
essentially underwrites the cost of the lessons. The only catch is that an
audition is required, but any competent high school level player should have
no trouble. There are still some real bargains around.

p.s. My own class (about 24 students) is divided equally between
instrumentalists and vocalists. It's great to get feedback from singers and
vice versa.
