James asked:
Is there a list of things I need to know in order
to interview a prospective teacher?

What I would suggest is first talk to the teacher on the phone. See if it
is someone you will be able to get along with. Find out if their interests
are similar to yours (classical, jazz, klezmer, etc.). Find out something
about their education and performing background.

If the phone interview is ok, take a sample lesson. Play for them and
insist they play for you. If you are satisfied proceed with regular
lessons. There generally isn't any long term commitment.

One other possibility. I know the local community college where I live
offers individual instrumental instruction to anyone who signs up. It is
generally more expensive than regular private lessons, but this still might
work for some people. However, it this point you probably couldn't start
until the Fall semester.
