There's been a lot of talk lately about tuners. Now, I must admit minimal
use of a tuner; I'll occasionally check myself, but as a rule I don't use
one. However, I do want to bring up an experience my accompanist had
recently. He went to New York City with a faculty member from the local
music school for auditions. He found that across the board (barring the
inevitable exceptions) instrumentalist were better sight singers than
singers, and pianists were the best.
Could it be that the addition of audible cues to what we are doing
(sounding and hearing a pitch) is reinforced by visual cues (seeing the
readout of a tuner)? (This of course implies one's brain being engaged...)
