Several years ago in an issue of The Clarinet I read of the college
friendship of a clarinetist and a flutist (who since became members of the
same orchestra, I believe). An exercise they would often perform together
was to crescendo and decrescendo on long tones, while working to keep in
tune. The beauty was that the natural inclinations of pitch on dynamic
change with those two instruments is opposite. Now *there's* an exercise!
