Most of the software I have seen lately has just this provision stated
right in the documentation. It would seem perfectly reasonable for music
purposes as well. Buy the music, make copies for performance, marked up to
your heart's content, while keeping the original fresh and clean. As long
as you can produce the original as proof of ownership, no sweat.

Of course, since I expect that most music will be distributed over the
internet or some similar system very soon, all of this may be moot. You
will buy a "site license," meaning permission to make or download as many
copies as needed for your own use. There is at least one publisher on the
internet right now, http://www.musicexpresso.com/, that operates this way,
but is limited to educational users.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
