I have a 3rd type of homemade bass cl stand. I thought the
ones I saw in the catalogs looked a bit flimsy (and pricey),
so decided to make my own.
Its made from a tube-steel type guitar stand with the U-shaped
support for the guitar body replaced by a wood block with a
carved trough to support the bell of the cl. I've extended
the neck support arm with a 5/8 inch wood dowel that fits
nicely into both the neck support tube and its receiver -
the neck of the bass clarinet rests in the padded guitar
neck cradle. There's even a strap attached to the neck cradle
to secure the instrument if needed - though the horn feels
very stable without any help from anything other than gravity.
The clarinet leans forward (ready to grab and play) supported
at both ends. The legs can be drilled to attach cl or flute
pegs if you double.
The only part that required much time & effort was the shaping
of the wood block, and that wasn't overwhelming - black paint
obscures a lot of sloppy carving.
The stand folds down to a lumpy 3' length, so its not as compact
as the others, but its solid as a rock. (...a good feature if
you're going to be using it in a crowded pit.)
