James, I have used a Qwik Time Chromatic Tuner (about $20) for several years
and am quite pleased. It's not the most sophisticated unit on the market but I
eschew paying for features that I don't use. The Quik Time tuner has proved
adequate for my practice sessions and for testing the clarinets that I work
on. The tuner has been subjected (inadvertently) to several drop tests and
survived. The company also offers a similarly inexpensive metronome that I use
occasionally. On the metronome, you can select a nervous-breakdown-inducing,
audible click or a blinky red LED ;-)
