After reading the discussion on adjustable thumbrests the last few days,
I've been thinking of getting one. I see the Bay thumbrest in the Woodwind
catalog and the Buffet thumbrest in the Weiner catalog. Can anyone tell me
how they differ and which, if either, is recommended? (I have an R13.)

By the way, my mother, whose adventures with beginning clarinet I've mentioned
here from time to time, is doing well with her Kooiman thumbrest, though she
says she still finds the clarinet awkward and non-ergonomically designed. She
joined a community band last fall and has made great strides in learning how
to keep up with a rhythm that waits for no one; it's a pleasure to play duets
with her now. The other week she told me that she had tried the practice
technique I had recommended of starting with a slow metronome setting and
gradually increasing it. She excitedly reported that it actually worked!
I think I'm beginning to see why teachers find their job so rewarding (though
we live apart and I'm not able to actually teach her).

Claudia
