Lauren,

First, check Anne Bell's web pages which are an excellent clarinet
resource on sneezy and order catalogs from the Woodwind & Brasswind,
International Music Suppliers, and Muncy. They all carry a wide variety
of mouthpieces, along with a variety of other items, and provide a fair
amount of information on them that may be useful to know when choosing a
new one. (Actually, I've copied some webpage addresses to the bottom of
this email, for your converience.)

Second, do you want something that is more open or more closed, for
classical or jazz or whatever, etc. You might want different
mouthpieces for different types of music or sounds.

Do you want a handmade professional mouthpiece? Ralph Morgan has an
excellent reputation for both his classical and jazz mouthpieces but
does not have a website. Others such as Clark Fobes have a website you
can locate on Anne's pages. Then, there are Jim Pyne's which a number
of symphony and classical players on the list seem to really like. Greg
Smith is another mouthpiece maker with an excellent reputation who comes
to mind. Tom Ridenour makes very good mouthpieces. There's also the
Hite Artist mouthpiece. And, there are others which I believe Anne
lists but do not come to mind at the moment.

>From what little I seem to understand about mouthpieces, knowing what
you want it to do seems critical. How much you're willing to spend is
certainly another critical issue.

Also, if you order from WW&BW, you can order three of the same model to
try and keep the one you want, sending the other two back. I simply
don't know if IMS and Muncy have a similar policy.

Check some of these websites for further information:

Last, have you tried a variety of different reeds with your current
mouthpiece. For example, Alexander or Zonda.

Good luck in your search for a better mouthpiece!

Jim
