It is possible for a clarinet player to play the saxophone in six minutes or
six months only if your standards are very low.
For someone to claim that there are fewer fingerings, just means that the
person making the claim is ignorant of the vast amount of different
fingerings available and usually necessary to perform on the saxophone at a
high level. If anyone is interested refer to Larry Teal's "The Art of
Saxophone Playing". Just as an example: I know of three fingerings for
middle C, four fingerings for middle C#, four fingerings for middle D, and
I could go on. I am very familiar with Tom Ridenour's "Clarinet
Fingerings" which mostly is concerned with altissimo fingerings. I refer to
it often.
For a vast amount of altissimo saxophone fingerings please refer to
"Saxophone High Tones", E. Rousseau and "Top Tones for the Saxophone", S.
Rascher. There are others.
To play saxophone elegantly and at the same artistic level we require of
other fine wind instrument players requires a tremendous amount of skill.
The terrible reputation the saxophone enjoys is probably due to the efforts
of the six month prodigies, not to mention the six minute prodigies.
I know this is not a saxophone list, but I am a clarinetist and a
saxophonist, not a saxophonist who plays clarinet or a clarinetist who plays
saxophone and I am sure there are others who are dedicated to these two
instruments.
I feel better getting that off my chest!
Marty
