I started the post originally regarding the bass clarinet/saxophone opening in
the montreal symphony. I never said that I've never heard of it required-
please don't misquote me. I was saying that usually, in major orchestras like
the MSO, a sax player would be brought in to do the concert. A friend of mine,
who is a sax player, frequently performs with the toronto symphony in this
function.

>>As for bass clarinet being easier or harder than soprano clarinet, I will
say
that if you have small, female hands, it's definitely tough to handle some of
those crazy licks you're asked to play (I really do think the horn was
designed for adult males). But it's worth it, because the bass is a fabulous
instrument, and, as others have mentioned, when people hear what it's really
supposed to sound like, they certainly have more appreciation for that
gorgeous, woody, dark sound with all that power!<<

Female hands? I know many women with large hands, including myself. I resent
the fact that my hands are automatically condsidered small because I'm a
woman. Why not just say small hands make the bass difficult to play? I
really don't have any trouble getting around a bass.
