I'm not a professional clarinet teacher, Larry, but I was thrilled when my
friend's son was able to sound open G about 5 minutes into the first lesson I
gave him. The E you refer to still requires quite a bit of coordination and
hole-covering for a newbie. There's a LOT to think about when you first put a
clarinet to your mouth. Also, make sure that the student isn't inadvertently
opening one of the trill keys or the register key. Kids hold clarinets
awkwardly at first. Finally, I wonder if your student knows what "lots of air"
means; she might be overblowing. That about exhausts my knowledge of this
area. Now I'll hand the mike to the REAL experts on the list...
