Seems to me that with the opportunities to work in popular music, there is
far more music and far more opportunity for sax players than clarinet
players. Also the opportunities are even better for multi-instrumentalists.

My sax teacher had a great career as a sax player who was also very
competent on flute and clarinet; his ability to play all the single reed
woodwinds brought him lots of work he would not have had as just a clarinet
or sax player. I play in a (for fun) swing band (clarinet/alto sax) and a
significant number of the charts require the saxophone players to also play
the clarinet. Our lead tenor is a fantastic sax/clarinet player who teaches
clarinet in a local university but who plays sax (in a way that inspires me
to awe) in a number of local bands.

Does he only want to play classical? Is there a reason that he should? The
jazz repertoire for saxophone is fantastic.
