Subj: [kl] Neck Straps and Thumb Rests

Some time back there were a few postings about neck straps.
Through a fortuitous chain of circumstances I now have one and am very
pleased with it.
Last summer I had my clarinet overhauled and asked for an adjustable thumb
rest to be added as I didn't think it was in the right place. The new thumb
rest has a screw that allows one to move the rest up or down and the screw
has a ring in it.
As a result of neck and shoulder pain after playing I decided to try a neck
strap and of course it fits nicely into the ring in the screw in the thumb
rest.
The strap I have is B&G (not elastic) and after getting used to it I find
that my playing is more relaxed and the pains have gone too.
I am curious to know why neck straps for clarinets seem to be such a rare
thing. Is it a macho thing?..."I don't need no sissy strap!" or is it
because saxes use them and we don't want to be like them do we? Or is there
an obvious reason that I am missing.
