Subj: [kl] "Proper" Subjects for the List
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 23:38:04 -0500

Golly, and I thought we were all virtual friends!

We had a discussion a while ago about the propriety of Richard
Wagner--mostly a historical discussion that I found fascinating. Wagner (a
very unspiffy man) wrote music (some of it pretty spiffy)--I guess that
qualified it for the list?

Every once in a while, a marching band thing starts up. Lots of kids love
them, professional teachers don't, and it gets tiring. As long as people
put "marching" in the subject, though, I don't really care--I have a
well-used "delete" key for stuff I don't care about.

Copyright is certainly on topic--I'd bet a tall latte that every person in
this list has or will photocopy music at some point. Ditto with putting
stuff on the internet--as responsible netizens, we owe it to our listmates
to give the right skinny.

The W.W.II history stuff? Well, maybe it isn't clarinet-centric, even
though the string started that way. I won't argue that a conversation
should probably be taken off line when it's just 2 people talking to each
other--but there seemed to be some general interest, and no one discussed it
for very long at all.

The conversations we have on this list are not unlike those I have in a
tavern with friends after rehearsal. We usually start off talking about
music. Occasionally, we stray off the subject--but we're all there for the
same reason. And we're all friends; at the very least, we should cut some
slack.

The bottom line (IMHO, of course) is that if there is a string you'd rather
see die, ignore it--and by all means, don't post and keep it going. Even
the marching band thing withers after a while.

Keep those reeds wet and your powder dry--

kjf
