Okay, I'll try - I've played an R13 for years, and don't have a lot of
experience with the new LeBlanc horns. I've tested the Sonata and Concerto at
my local music store, but haven't worked with either for any length of time.
The Symphonie VII blows similarly, with that evenness of response through the
entire range and ease of crossing the upper break that seems to be
characteristic of these instruments. I really like the clarion and upper
registers, but miss something in the lower register. The sound on my R13
seems "bigger" somehow - sorry for the imprecise language, folks! Perhaps
that's something I would get used to if I played one regularly. Mr. Voxman
thought, and I agreed, that this particular horn was a little "dead" around C
below the staff. We thought the left-hand C key was a little too low, and
could be closer to the other left-hand pinky keys. The left-hand Eb/Ab was
okay - a little bit of a stretch, maybe, but not at all in the way. I wasn't
going to hit it by accident. As I said before, it's made of rosewood - quite
attractive - and has an adjustable thumbrest (which felt fine for me right
where it was, but was awkward with my neck strap). We gather it's meant to be
an alternative to the Opus, but are not sure what the differences, other than
the wood, are. Jack Kissinger tells me there is some limited information on
the LeBlanc website (duh! why didn't I think of that?). That's pretty much
all I know!
