Unfortunately, my experience in "The Music Man" was my all-time worst
ever in the pit (it was this particular production that coined the
phrase "it's the pits!").
The musical director did not seem to think the orchestra needed to
rehearse any of the music separately before we started rehearsing with
the cast the week before the show. The orchestra was too big for the
theatre (and the unmic'ed cast!), and she continually told the WINDS
(not the brass, mind you!) to play softer. At the same time, she'd
invite any brass player who wandered into the theatre to come play with
us! (I eventually just noted which pieces she wanted "quieter" and just
didn't play them. I spent half the show reading magazines).
The pit turned out so bad that in the newpaper weekend guide, where
they only had enough room to write one paragraph about each show, they
wrote, "The orchestra stinks!" List members in the Annapolis area
probably know which theatre this was!

The music was fun, though (the parts I got to play, that is!)
