There are several methods of octave notation. For the woodwind
instruments, I like the one which numbers the octaves from the lowest C on
the instrument. So, on the clarinet, middle C, one ledger line below the
staff, through B natural, 3rd line, is C1 through B1. The next C, on the
third space, through the B natural about the staff is C2 through B2. Then,
the altissimo register beginning 2 ledger lines above the staff is C3,
etc. The note which was mentioned (high, high A) is A3. The notes below
the lowest C are designated as E0, F0, etc., through B0.

This works well for all woodwind instruments, but better for all the
others than for clarinet, because there are not so many notes below the
lowest C on the flute, oboe, saxophone or bassoon.
