Courtesy of Ralph Turek's "The Elements of Music" (and, I suspect, most music
theory books), the standard convention is to designate middle C as c1 (the "1"
*should* be a superscript but, as superscripts are not readily available in most
email software, some list members prefer c'). From the lowest C on a piano to the
highest C, the designations would be CC, C, c, c1 (c'), c2 (c''), c3 (c'''), c4
(c'''') and c5 (c'''''). The lowest note on the piano is AAA. The note Kirsten
refers to is thus a3 (a''').
