Subj: [kl] Albert system keywork

Here's a flaky one for the list, but it's absolutely
clarinet-related! I recently picked up an old Buffet Albert system Bb -
doesn't everyone want one? It needs some work, not surprisingly (and
thanks to Cindy Field for her suggestions), but seems fundamentally
sound, just well-worn, as you would be too if you were from 1907.
However, I'm not sure of how the Albert system RH side/trill keys are
supposed to work, although I have fingering chart (and I now know why
old jazz players used Albert a lot - it's amazingly similar to the
saxophone, making doubling probably a lot easier). There are three
rather than the Bb's four side keys, and on this one the top (uppermost)
key opens the middle key as it is depressed, but it doesn't seem
designed to do that. Is it bent or is this just part of the Albert
mechanism?
On another note - what a complication it must have been earlier in
this century to teach clarinet to a class of kids with two different
fingering systems.
