Subj: [kl] Clarinet key to research on musicians' health
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 20:14:15 -0500

In today's Toronto Sun newspaper there is an article (reprinted from the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram) describing a study by researchers at the Texas
Centre for Music and Medicine looking at the mechanics of instrument
playing. The article suggests that years of devotion to the clarinet can
weigh heavily on the thumb, sometimes triggering pain up through the
wrist and hand to the shoulder and neck. The clarinet, according to Kris
Chesky, research assistant professor in UNT's College of Music,
presented a good starting point, because most of the instrument's weight
falls in one place.

Music's health survey on the Web go to
