the
substantial economic benefits of the "schmooze" he plays on the air and in
recordings.

I, too, find his commercial playing something to avoid but I would not write
off his established competence in a number of styles. Anyone else have any
personal insight into this issue? My information is second hand...does
anyone on the list know Kenny G personally?>>>

Yes. Me. I went to the University of Washington w/ Kenny Gorelick, and had
the privilege of playing with him on a number of occasions. I have also
heard him blister paint at jazz clubs when he plays bebop for recreation.

What you have heard about his "standard" jazz playing is not true--he is
far, far "better" than what you have heard. Kenny is a phenomenal jazz
musician, even though he is too humble to assert it in interviews. (In
fact, he'll usually state some BS about how he really doesn't have the
talent etc.) His CDs sell, which is why he makes them; I have never
understood the vitriol of people who would deny him a comfortable living.
