Anna,

I find that even though the human ear can hear upwards of 20,000cps, we
begin to lose fine discrimination much earlier.  Around the range of
piccolos and Eb clarinets.  As we lose some of our ability to hear
ourselves, we tend to play sharp in an unconscious effort to boost the
harmonics we are beginning to miss and therefore we play sharp.  It
sounds right.  It's hard to get used to sounding slightly dull/flat and
accepting that as correct.  I find it's one of the major hurdles of the
high register.  As if it needed another!
