I totally agree. When we have wind sectionals at youth orchestra, the tuner
comes out to tune us up, and goes away straight after that. We have a
flautist as a tutor, and he's very keen on using harmonics to make sure
we're playing in tune. We've all learnt how to listen, and most of the time
it works very well. Occasionally the piccolo can be a bit tricky, as can
the Eb clarinet, but generally, most of us are able to tell if we're wrong.
I think that training your ears can take a little while, and there's no harm
in using a tuner if you're not entirely sure. but you should try and work it
our aurally first. But once you've reached a certain level, I would say
that the tuner is an aid you should be able to do without.
