I remember reading somewhere about research indicating that
either string or wind musicians tend to "naturally"
want to play melodically in Phythagorean temperament and
only naturally modify this to just intonation
(with the lower thirds, etc.) when playing in a chord.
Anyone have a reference for this?

In particular, is it truly an issue of Pythagorean (circle of
fifths) versus just (small-integer-ratios) or is it the fact
that psychoacoustically people tend to lean towards
wider intervals, and so we tend to two equal large full tones and
one small semitone in each fourth?
