Michael,

I hadn't thought of this as a root of the problem, but I'll bet you're
right on the mark.  It would also explain the large difference in how
wind and string players use these tuners.  Good point!!

And keep working on your intonation, even if you're the only one around
who cares and does it.  Develop the skill, expand your abilities.
