I have a record (!) E 88 296; Vienna Disc A-1201 Vienna 106: (probably from
the seventies)
"W|st a Piksiass Hvlzl hean" Klassisches Wiener Schrammelquartett
The title is Viennese dialect and means "Wan'a hear a sugar sweet little
piece of wood?"
So you can imagine what it's all about. "Piksiass Hvlz" is a viennese
nickname for a clarinet in G. The Musicians are Prof. Lois Bvck 1st violin,
Prof Anton P|rker/Herbert Stiglitz 2nd Violin, Prof. Richard Schvnhofer
clarinet in G, Fritz Matouschek Contraguitar. Schvnhofer is or was
Soloclarinetist of the Wiener Symphoniker.
All compositions from Aloys Stromayer and Johann Schramml (1850 - 1893). The
liner notes say that Schramml and Stromayer were the only componists working
for this type of quartett. Kaspar Schramml, the father of the two more
famous Schrammel brothers (Johann must have been one of them, Josef 1852 -
1895 the other) played clarinet in G himself.
As you found a cd for the same kind of quartett I presume that there must be
printed music at least in some archives (if a shop like Doeblinger is asked
for Schramml-Music they probably think of the folklore typed viennese genre
not of Johann Schramml's compositions. Perhaps it is worth while to look for
his or Alois Strohmayers compositions.
---
Just looking up data in a Vienna encyclopedia I found an old photo from the
original Schrammel Quartett. The Musicians are Johann Schrammel violin &
leader, Josef Schramml violin, Georg Ddnzer Clarinet in G (you cannot
recocnize the instrument on the photo but the liner notes of the above
mentioned record say Ddnzer was one of the famous players of the rare
instrument), Aloys Stromayer Contraguitar (the instrument is not mentioned
but the comparison with the cover photo on the record "Klassisches Wiener
Schrammelquartett" is the proof). So at least two of the musicians composed
for themselves.
In the encyclopedia they mention literature: Mei_l, Rudolf Alexander: Die
Schrammel-Dynastie (1943); Mailler, H.: Schrammelquartett (1943)
If you like a scan of the old photo just mail me.
Besides of all the historic stuff the music is wonderful and I hope the put
in on CD and you can find it.
