That was not as much of a problem as you would think. As today, the string
and wind players would try to keep intervals pure (not at all easy on the
winds as you stray from their best "Key"), and as today, they would make
snide remarks about the keyboard player. Of course, particularly during the
time of Basso Continuo, one usually had to deal with a keyboard and in these
battles, the keyboard player always wins.

Now, people fought as to the best temperament to use on keyboard
instruments, but that was of interest mostly to the theorists and the
keyboard players.
